When it comes to going out for lunch or tea and cake, we’re quite spoilt for choice in the area. There are some fantastic cafés and tea rooms, some rather quirky and well worth a visit. Who can’t resist a freshly baked cake or a breakfast of crispy bacon and eggs? 😋
We have included opening hours and website details of a selection of cafés below, but please check that opening hours and Covid rules haven’t changed before setting out.
Northney Tea Rooms, Hayling Island
Northney Tea Rooms are located on Northney Farm, which is a working dairy farm. It is on the north side of Hayling Island with fabulous countryside views towards Chichester Harbour.
The tea rooms are open every day from 10am to 5pm, currently with outside seating only. Breakfast is served from 10am to 12noon and lunch from 12-3.30pm. You can view their latest menu here.

The Canteen, Old Portsmouth
The Canteen is a waterfront café in Old Portsmouth with amazing views across the Solent. They are located in the historic barracks in the Hotwalls Arts Quarter.
The café is open every day from 8am to 4pm for outside dining and takeaways. You can view their latest menus here, which include breakfast, cakes and pastries, children’s menu and drinks.

The Parade Tea Rooms, Southsea Common
The Parade Tea Rooms are in a renovated old sub-station building on Western Parade, located directly on Southsea Common. It’s a great location to watch the world go by while enjoying a coffee or the delicious food and cakes served at the café.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, Saturdays and Sundays 8am-5pm. They do not take bookings, tables are available on a first come, first served basis.
The Old Forge Tea Room, Hambledon
Much closer to Wallops Wood, the Old Forge Tea Room is in the village of Hambledon, just a couple of miles down the road.
Serving breakfast, lunch and teas they are open from 9.30am to 3.30pm, 7 days per week.
The Tea Barn, Durleighmarsh
The Tea Barn is located on a farm in Durleighmarsh, just outside Petersfield. They serve breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Located on the Sussex border path, a well-trodden path for walkers and cyclists, it makes a great pit stop if you’re out on a longer walk or bike ride. There is also a farm shop and pick your own at Durleighmarsh.
Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday 10am – 4pm. Closed Mondays & Tuesdays. Outside dining only, but you can book a table in advance, tel: 01730 818286
The Tenth Hole, Southsea
A popular café in Southsea, the Tenth Hole is located next to a 9-hole pitch and putt golf course. They are open for breakfast, lunch and cakes for outside dining and takeaways.

Wilfred’s Café, Droxford
Wilfred’s is a community run café in Droxford, just a short drive from Wallops Wood. They are currently closed for dining, but are open for takeaway drinks, snacks and cakes on Fridays and Saturdays from 10.30am to 12noon.
