Wallops Wood Cottages Wins Twice in Prestigious 2020-2021 Travel Awards

Currently closed due to COVID-19, we are excited to be kickstarting 2021 with another TWO awards!

At the virtual awards ceremony for Beautiful South Tourism Awards for Excellence 2020-2021 (held Thursday 04 March 2021), we won Silver for the Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Award and Peter Foster, Estate Maintenance Manager was one of the winners for Unsung Hero Award.

Typically modest, Peter said: “It’s the team that’s made me a hero, it’s a joint effort – it’s what everyone does to pull together.”

Peter is approaching his 40th work anniversary at Wallops Wood, having joined the company in May 1981. He started work when the estate farmed chickens and eggs, and was responsible for rearing the pullets. When the farm closed in 2006 and the conversion to holiday cottages started, he became responsible for site maintenance.

In this most difficult of years, we’re also proud to have won Green Tourism Gold, Visit England’s We’re Good to Go and the AA’s COVID Confident accreditations, Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice 2020, as well as VisitEngland’s National Self-Catering Accommodation of the Year Silver.

Surrounded by the spectacular countryside of the Meon Valley, a green ethos is at the heart of everything we do without compromising accommodation quality.

Green initiatives to help reduce the environmental impact of self-catering cottages in the South Downs National Park include:

  • A private borehole provides the water supply and is UV treated to ensure crystal clear water. This means no chlorination is needed even for the indoor heated swimming pool so the water is kinder to eyes, skin and the environment. And harvested rainwater feeds back to the aquifer supplying the borehole ensuring a sustainable water supply.
  • Solar panels power all 8 cottages, the indoor swimming pool complex, laundry facilities and the biomass boiler.
  • Our biomass boiler is fed by woodchips, sourced locally.
  • Only distilled vinegar and environmentally friendly products are used to clean the cottages, avoiding the usage of harsh chemicals.

The Beautiful South Awards said: “Congratulations to all our finalists. Achieving excellence is not easy, particularly in the year we have just navigated. Many of the winners are truly world class.”

Owners Andrew and Katherine Graham said: “We are delighted to win Silver for the Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Award, and that Peter Foster has been recognised as an Unsung Hero; he deserves it. We simply couldn’t do without him.”
